"The Virgin with Three Hands". Middle of the 19th century. Wood, tempera RARE SUBJECT. The icon depicts the Virgin with three hands. The history of the subject states that in the 8th century, John of Damask, who wrote the three treatises "against the blaming the holy icons", was defamed and executed due to the order of emperor Lion. St. John was cut off a right hand. He asked to give him his hand back, and when he came home, to the Holy Virgin he started to pray, putting his cut hand to a joint, asking for a healing and returning his hand. After this he got unconscious, and when he woke up, his right hand was back in place without any sighs of the wounds.
