Above on the right "OUR LADY the joy of all mournful people". Below on the left "The Virgin of Tikhvin" (the finest image of the Virgin with the Holy Child. The icon of the Virgin of Tihvin is specially honored in Orthodox Christianity; according to the legend, the icon used to be kept in Constantinople for 5 centuries, and just before the invasion of Turkish armies, the icon disappeared from the city, and approximately at the same time it appeared near the lake of Ladoga. The fishermen saw the icon moving over the water. Afterwards, the icon appeared in many places, and finally stopped by the river of Tihvinka, close to the Tihvin city. 93w "The Virgin with Three Hands". Middle of the 19th century. Wood, tempera RARE SUBJECT. The icon depicts the Virgin with three hands. The history of the subject states that in the 8th century, John of Damask, who wrote the three treatises "against the blaming the holy icons", was defamed and executed due to the order of emperor Lion. St. John was cut off a right hand. He asked to give him his hand back, and when he came home, to the Holy Virgin he started to pray, putting his cut hand to a joint, asking for a healing and returning his hand. After this he got unconscious, and when he woke up, his right hand was back in place without any sighs of the wounds. As a gratitude for a miracle, the Saint attached a crafted silver hand to the icon of the Virgin: afterwards, the icon was called The Virgin - Three Hands. Size 35,5 x 30,5 x 3,0 cm.
