Front: Rafael Yglesias Castro (1861–1924), Costa Rican politician who served as President of Costa Rica for two consecutive periods from 1894 to 1902. "Guaria Morada" (Cattleya skinneri), a purple orchid. It was designated the National Flower of Costa Rica on 15th of June, 1939. Reverse: Allegory scene of Teatro Nacional (mural painting by Aleardo J. Villa, 1897), also known as the “Allegory of coffee and banana” (Alegoría del café y el banano), which decorates the ceiling of the National Theater in San Jose. Watermark: Sadly, none. Security features: Two consecutively running red horizontal serial numbers on the obverse of the banknote. Visible to the eye coloured filament fibers (hairs) fluoresce under ultraviolet light. Main colour: Green. Artist: De La Rue. Engraver: De La Rue. Signatures: Carlos Manuel Castillo Morales (Presidente Ejecutivo); Olivier Castro Pérez (Gerente). Printing method: Intaglio.
