Obverse: French philosopher, mathematician, physicist and writer René Descartes (Renatus Cartesius) (31st March 1596 – 11th February 1650); In the background - Clio (muse of history in Greek mythology). Reverse: Statue of victory garlic burning "PAX" on a shield; Horses pulling a cart full of straw or hay. Work by: Lucien Jonas. Engraved by: Emile Deloche. Watermark: Roman man's head in profile. Printer: Banque de France. Signatures: P. Rousseau, R. Favre-Gilly. Date of Issue: 15th May 1942.
