The sailors are shown carrying lit candles, intending to visit the churches of Our Lady of Victory and Our Lady of Antigua in thanksgiving. This marked the return of the Spice Expedition led by Ferdinand Magellan, which, after sailing for almost three years, completed the first circumnavigation of the globe. Thus the painting is commemorating the 400th anniversary of the first circumnavigation of the world.
